Secondary School I

After completing the Primary School in Grade 4, learning continues in Grade 5 on a gymnasium school level guided by German educational standards. On the foundation of modern and open teaching methods as well as differentiation based on competency, integrated learning takes place in our multi-cultural set-up. Subject teachers lay the foundation for foreign languages, natural sciences and social sciences. Sports and musical-artistic subjects contribute to developing well-rounded individuals. In the Secondary School I (Grades 5 – 9) there is close cooperation with the educators in the German and English speaking classes through joint teaching of subjects or integrated learning groups. In the German classes, the Secondary School I can be completed with a school-leaving certificate equivalent to the German “Hauptschulabschluss” (Grade 9) or “Realschulabschluss” (Grade 10).

Support

In the German classes, the DSP offers additional remedial teaching in the subjects of Mathematics, German and English. Learners with learning difficulties are supported by appropriate remedial measures and special needs compensations. In Grades 5 and 6, the subject "Learning to Learn" is taught (1 lesson per week). Here the children learn self-organisation and self-motivation, time management, concentration exercises and how to deal with stress, how to learn best (i.e. learning strategies and learning techniques), and how to prepare for exams. The subject of special interest (Grades 5 and 6) supports and promotes the learners' strengths and interests in various areas such as art, science, music, etc.

Languages

Good language education is a priority at the DSP. In addition to German and English at mother tongue level, Afrikaans is taught as first additional language or French as 2nd additional language from Grade 6 onwards, and the children may choose between the two languages. Additional language support in German and English (2 lessons per week) is part of our offering. Furthermore, scholar exchanges to Germany enable the learners to deepen their language skills

New Secondary School

School of Encounter

Since 1988 the Deutsche Internationale Schule has been a School of Encounter where intercultural exchange is a primary goal. Through the financial support of the Federal Republic of Germany, the DSP has been able to enrol academically strong learners from disadvantaged areas such as Mamelodi and Eersterust into our New Secondary School (NSek). After a one-year preparation course, approximately 25 learners are chosen from our Partner Schools to be enrolled in the class 5c , based on their performance in Mathematics, English and their general social behaviour.

Integration is a priority at the DSP and joint activities such as extramural sports like soccer and handball, the school’s orchestra and LEGO Robotics promote the co-existence of socially and culturally diverse groups.

Integrated class trips in Grades 5, 7 and 8, integrated lessons in subjects such as Sports, English and Afrikaans as well as sports days all contribute to the DSP being a school of encounter.

Outreach Programme

Events with our partner schools promote an understanding of our culturally diverse community. Teacher training programmes, teacher- and learner exchange programmes contribute to the success of the Outreach Programme. In addition to these programmes more cultural and sporting events are offered in co-operation with the German Embassy such as our musical outreach events, soccer tournaments and Learn-to-Swim-programmes for our Partner Schools.
