Secondary School II

The DSP offers two school leaving certificates: the Kombiabitur and the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC). At the end of Grade 9, learners opt for the Kombiabitur (Abitur and NSC) or NSC for Grades 10–12. The lessons in the Kombizweig are mainly presented in German, with German Home Language, Mathematics, Science, History and French being taught in accordance with the requirements of the German International Abitur. English on Home Language level (for all), Life Orientation (including Sport), Afrikaans, Appreciation of Art or Music follow the South African standards. German and English are both on Home Language level, and for the First Additional Language learners have the choice between French and Afrikaans. The final examination for the Kombiabitur comprises German and three further examinations in the German subjects as well as English, Afrikaans and Life Orientation written through the Independent Examinations Board (IEB).

The Kombiabitur qualification entitles learners to study in Germany, South Africa and other (European) countries. When choosing the NSC or Matric qualification, learners are prepared in English for the examination at the end of Grade 12. In order to obtain a National Senior Certificate learners need to do the following compulsory subjects:

  • An official language on Home Language level – in our case English
  • A First Additional Language level of one of the official languages of South Africa – in our case Afrikaans
  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
  • Life Orientation

Our offering for the NSC Certificate is guided by the IEB (Independent Examinations Board) requirements and sanctioned by UMALUSI (Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training).

The German Language Diploma Level II, which is also examined at the Deutsche Internationale Schule Pretoria, enables learners to supplement the NSC qualification and allows them to apply for studies in Germany.
